Course Description

The Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) Specialist in Blood Banking Technology (SBBT) Program provides comprehensive training in all phases of blood banking.  The technical and didactic curriculum covers a period of fifteen months.  Successful completion of this program allows the student to take the Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) exam sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).  The CBC/CTS SBBT Program does not lead to a Master’s degree, nor is graduate credit given for any of the didactic or clinical rotations.  SBBT Program administrators will award a certificate to those students who complete and meet the minimum requirements of the SBBT program.

Course Accreditation

The Community Blood Center / Community Tissue Services™ SBBT Program is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Students enrolled in CAAHEP accredited programs are twice as likely to pass the SBB Certification exam vs. students who are not enrolled in a program.

Program Objectives

To provide graduates with advanced knowledge and increased confidence in the areas of education, consultation, administration, supervision and research in the fields of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine.

The students will be expected to master certain core materials offered in the didactic section of the training and certain practical aspects offered in the daily working of a blood donor center.

The emphasis of the SBBT Program is the mastery of fundamental knowledge in the area of Immunology and Immunohematology and general approaches to systematic, disciplined problem solving.

After successfully completing the training program, each technologist will be able to function with a high level of skill and confidence as a manager/supervisor, educator or other role in a transfusion service or blood center.

Why should I make the commitment and obtain a SBB certification?

  1. SBBs can serve as regulatory, procedure, and research advisors.
  2. SBBs can perform and direct administrative functions.
  3. SBBs often design and present educational programs.
