Your students will be greeted at the door by Karl Landsteiner, the first to discover blood typing. As they move into the interior of the L.A.B., they hear a thumping heart beat. The first display takes them back in history when the scientific foundation of modern transfusion medicine was laid by Charles Drew. Next, students encounter the circulatory man with his veins and arteries seen in 3D. Each student experiences his or her own pulse and learns how the heart pumps blood through a
system of veins, arteries and capillaries that would encircle the earth two and a half times. At the Blood Biology station, students handle detailed, scientifically accurate models of red and white blood cells and get a microscopic look at blood cells in action. Then students are introduced to blood donation at the Donation Station and learn about how blood saves lives. Students learn how many pints of blood circulate within their bodies. In the center of the L.A.B., students will make a symbolic blood donation with red marbles representing their pint. Marbles roll, ping, bounce and reach “the patient” in a labyrinth designed to capture the students’ attention. Finally, students get a look at healthy versus diseased blood cells. They meet real people whose lives have been saved by blood and local heroes who have donated the “gift of life.” So climb aboard and experience this interactive classroom on wheels that is The L.A.B. (Learning About Blood).

The L.A.B. is an interactive learning environment that has special requirements in order to provide a successful educational experience for students.

Requirements:

  • Level surface for parking
  • Adult Volunteer to shuttle students to and from the L.A.B.
  • Access to an electrical outlet preferred to reduce generator noise
    • In order to connect the LAB to a power supply from the building, the Institution needs to provide a power receptacle with a plug to match the generator cord from the LAB.

This is a Type CS6353 twist lock receptacle.

  • One hour required for up to 24 students
    • Additional 15 minutes per 5 additional students
    • 150 maximum number of students per school day
    • Wheelchair accessible (coming soon): one wheelchair per tour; one-on-one tours recommended

Recommendations:

  • Show My Blood Your Blood video presentation in advance
  • Break students into groups prior to The L.A.B. visit
    • Teams could be named after Platelets, Plasma, Red Cells, White Cells, etc.
    • Students not touring the L.A.B. could work on activity books provided by CBC
