National Blood Donor Month is the time to recognize the altruism of area blood donors.
Blood donors save nearly five million American lives annually.
Only 37% of the population is eligible to donate blood and less than 10% of those who could donate actually do donate annually.
1 in 7 patients entering the hospital will need blood.
One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of up to three people.
The #1 reason that blood donors give for being a donor is because they “want to help others.”
17% of non-donors say they “never thought about it” as the main reason for not giving while 15% say they’re too busy.
The rarest blood type is the one that is not on the shelf when it’s needed by a patient.
If an additional 1% of Americans donated blood, blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future.
Much of today’s medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy donors.
CBC began the week 740 pints low with a need for donors with all blood types, especially type O-negative blood. Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name. Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card. Donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 years old with parental consent: form available at www.givingblood.org or at CBC branch & blood drive locations), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1(800)388-GIVE.
