Blood Supply 600 Pints Low; Near Record Usage Yesterday

DAYTON, OH — (April 26, 2007) The blood supply has improved over the past couple days but is still 601 pints below safe and adequate levels.  Transfusions yesterday were at near record levels for a 24 hour period with area patients utilizing 302 pints.

Yesterday, Community Blood Center (CBC) collected 449 usable pints of blood from an impressive 610 blood donors who registered to give blood.  CBC thanks those donors for their life-saving gifts.  CBC needs 350 pints a day to meet the needs of patients in the 25 hospitals in 15 counties it serves.  Eligible donors with all blood types are invited to give blood every eight weeks to help keep the blood supply at healthy levels.

Near record blood usage last weekend, lackluster turnout at blood drives and high usage for the past several weeks strained the center’s supply of types O and A blood this week causing CBC to issue a call for donors.  For more information, visit www.givingblood.org.

Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate.  Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name.  Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE.
