FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 9, 2007
DAYTON, OH — (May 9, 2007) As part of the national “Thanks Mom” campaign, Community Blood Center (CBC) is hosting a bone marrow drive on Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11 at CBC’s downtown Dayton location at 349 S. Main Street. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The usual $52 dollar processing fee for joining the registry is waived for this campaign so that potential donors may join free of charge.
The “Thanks Mom” drive is part of a nationwide effort running from May 7-21 by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). CBC’s drive is one of hundreds taking place across the nation in an effort to increase the number of donors on the NMDP Registry by 20,000.
Did you know?
- Each year, more than 35,000 children and adults in the United States are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia.
- A marrow or blood cell transplant is a way to treat and possibly cure people with Leukemia and other deadly diseases…diseases which can strike anyone, of any age, gender or ethnicity.
- Thousands of people do not have a matching donor in their family. They are searching for a volunteer donor, someone willing to step forward to save their life.
- Every search conducted through the NMDP Registry provides patients with access to more than 10 million donors worldwide. Yet, because successful transplants require detailed matching, even 10 million is not enough for every patient to find a match.
- The best chance of finding a match is between people who share the same racial or ethnic background. Diverse donors are especially needed.
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 60, in good health and willing to help any patient is eligible to join. More information about “Thanks Mom” and becoming a marrow donor is available at www.marrow.org.
For more information on blood donation, visit www.givingblood.org. Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate. Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name. Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.
Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1(800)388-GIVE.
