Blood Supply 960 Pints Low After Record Blood Usage Over Memorial Day Weekend

DAYTON, OH — (May 29, 2007) Community Blood Center (CBC) has an immediate need for blood donors with all blood types following what is believed to be a record for blood used over a holiday weekend.  Patients in the area received 809 pints of blood this weekend while CBC collected 373 usable pints.  The most significant shortages are for blood types O, A, and B.  Currently, CBC has less than a day’s supply of type A+ and B+ on its shelves.  CBC has about a day and a half supply of type O blood on center shelves.

Excessive amounts of blood were used this weekend for the following:

  • 15 A+: patient with a gastrointestinal bleed
  • 16 O+: hemorrhaging patient
  • 7 A+: patient in surgery
  • 6 B+: heart patient
  • 11 O+: Hemorrhaging patient

At this time, the general public is asked to donate at one of our donor centers in Dayton, Middletown, Springfield, West Chester and Richmond, IN or at one of our community blood drives.  For more information, visit: www.givingblood.org.

“Long holiday weekends are always hard on the blood supply,” stated Jodi Minneman, chief operating officer of blood services.  “This past weekend was especially demanding on the blood supply.  We need donors who have not given blood in the past two months to donate at this time to help the blood supply recover as we head into the summer months.”

Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate.  Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name.  Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE.
