Join the "Hero Blood Tour 2007"; Donate Blood and Get a Free T-Shirt!

DAYTON, OH — (June 7, 2007) “You don’t have to be a super hero to save a life.  Just roll up your sleeve and donate blood” at Community Blood Center (CBC) this summer!  Everyone who registers to donate blood at any CBC blood drive or branch location from June 14 to September 1 will receive a FREE “Hero Blood Tour” T-shirt.  To find a list of blood drives in your area or information on CBC branch locations, visit www.givingblood.org.

The “Hero Blood Tour” campaign kicks-off in celebration of World Blood Donor Day, June 14.  The global event aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood around the world, to thank and honor those blood donors who make transfusion possible, and to encourage healthy eligible individuals to donate blood regularly.

CBC must collect 350 pints of blood a day to meet the needs of area patients in the 25 hospitals located in 15 counties served by CBC.  Summer is a difficult time for the area blood supply as regular donors are distracted with seasonal activities and vacation.  At the same time, most schools are on break and those student donors who were so critical to the blood supply during the spring months are less available.  Currently the area blood supply is over 800 pints low.

For more information on blood donation, visit www.givingblood.org.  Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate.  Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name.  Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1(800)388-GIVE.
