Heroes Wanted to Donate Blood; Blood Supply Critically Low

DAYTON, OH — (June 26, 2007)Community Blood Center (CBC) urges healthy individuals who have not given blood in the past two months to give blood at this time.  The blood supply is 930 pints low.  That’s 26% of CBC’s overall inventory.  While not a full emergency at this time, CBC needs donors now to prevent a blood emergency.

  • Type O-negative blood is 36% low
  • Type O+ is 35% low
  • Type A+ is 27% low
  • Type B-negative is 30% low

Community Blood Center (CBC) has just a one day supply of key blood types O+, O-, A+ and A- on blood center shelves.  CBC has no B- blood left on its shelves.  Most of the existing blood inventory is currently in the hospitals, though CBC is limited in its ability to replenish hospital shelves due to the severe blood shortfall.  If a major catastrophe were to occur, CBC does not have enough blood in reserve to respond.  The deficiency is largely due to low donor turn out.

The low blood supply is worrisome especially with the upcoming 4th of July holiday just a week away.  All CBC locations will be closed on July 4 which will mean lower collections for the week.

CBC is in the midst of its Hero Blood Tour summer blood donation campaign.  Everyone who registers to donate blood at any CBC blood drive or branch location from June 14 to September 1 will receive a FREE Hero T-shirt.

Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate.  Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name.  Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1(800)388-GIVE.
