FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 17, 2006
DAYTON, OH — (Monday, July 17, 2006) The emergency appeal for donors will remain in effect today as the area blood supply is still 750+ pints low. Over the weekend (Fri., Sat., & Sun.), Community Blood Center (CBC) registered 717 donors and collected 574 usable pints of blood. Area patients used 548 pints over the weekend including the following excess usages:
- 20 O+ and 3 O- for a trauma
- 4 AB+ and 2 AB- for an obstetrics patient
- 11 O+ for pelvic surgery
“It is unusual but necessary for us to continue an emergency appeal for blood donors into a second week,” stated Judith Woll, M.D., Chief Executive Officer for CBC. “The blood supply is as important a resource to public health and safety as our EMS, fire and rescue squads and law enforcement personnel. Blood saves lives.”
Currently, the area’s blood supply is 766 pints or 21% below safe and adequate levels. Six of eight blood types are low, with Type O blood, which is the universal donor type, in particularly short supply (427 pints low). Only type AB blood is at ideal levels.

CBC urges healthy donors who have not given blood in the past two months to donate blood at this time. Donors need to bring a photo ID with their full name and their Social Security Number.
Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE. Prospective donors with recent tattoos obtained in Kentucky or Ohio can now give blood as long as the tattoo area has healed and the procedure was done in a licensed tattoo parlor.
