Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services Announces a New Education Program for Blood Bank Professionals

DAYTON, OH —Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) will unveil a new educational program for blood banking professionals in January, 2007.  The CBC/CTS Specialist in Blood Banking Technology (SBBT) Program provides comprehensive training in all phases of blood banking.

This program is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Committee on Accreditation of Specialists in Blood Bank Technology Schools.  Successful completion of this program allows the student to take the Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) exam sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).  The SBBT Program administrators will award a certificate to those students who complete and meet the minimum requirements of the SBBT program.  The technical and didactic curriculum covers a period of twelve months.

According to Chris Draper, Director of Scientific Services at CBC/CTS and Program Director, “the SBBT program will provide graduates with advanced knowledge and increased confidence in the areas of education, consultation, administration, supervision and research in the fields of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine.  CAAHEP graduates are twice as likely to pass the SBB Certification versus those that have not gone through the program.”

The students will be expected to master certain core materials offered in the didactic section of the training and certain practical aspects offered in the daily working of a blood donor center.  The emphasis of the SBBT Program is the mastery of fundamental knowledge in the area of Immunology and Immunohematology and general approaches to systematic, disciplined problem solving.  After successfully completing the training program, each technologist will be able to function with a high level of skill and confidence as a manager/supervisor, educator or other role in a transfusion service or blood center.
