Social Security Numbers No Longer Needed to Donate Blood

DAYTON, OH — (September 6, 2006) Beginning September 5, blood donors who donate at any  Community Blood Center (CBC) location or blood drive no longer need to provide their social security numbers when they register to donate blood.  Donors will retain their CBC assigned donor ID numbers and new donors will receive a donor ID number when they register for the first time.  Additionally, CBC has removed donor social security numbers from laptop computers used at mobile blood drives.

“We are pleased to remove the need for identification using a social security number as a requirement for blood donation,” stated Jodi Minneman, Chief Operating Officer of Blood Services.  “We decided it was important to take this step now to further protect our donors’ confidential information.”

Who can donate blood?  CBC must collect 335 pints of blood a day to meet the needs of area patients in the 25 hospitals served by CBC.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE.
