DAYTON, OH — (September 13, 2007)Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services' (CBC/CTS) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of David M. Smith, M.D. as Chief Executive Officer/Medical Director, effective December 1, 2007. Dr. Smith succeeds Dr. Judith E. Woll who announced her retirement in August. Dr. Smith was chosen from a group of candidates after a more than six month national search conducted by Witt-Keiffer.
As CEO, Dr. Smith will oversee all policy, strategic, fiscal and operational assets of CBC/CTS. "The Board is pleased to have Dr. Smith lead the organization as it continues to grow to fulfill its mission of saving and enhancing lives,” stated James Lehner, M.D., President of CBC/CTS’ Board of Trustees. “His extensive knowledge and background in blood and tissue banking will be a strong asset to the organization,” added Dr. Lehner.
Dr. Smith is currently the Medical Director of CBC/CTS and the President of The Foundation for Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services. Prior to joining CBC/CTS in 2003, Dr. Smith was a staff Pathologist and Director of Autopsy Services at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. Dr. Smith began his career as a Forensic Pathologist with the Montgomery County Coroner's Office in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Smith grew up in Fairborn and has been a life-long resident of the greater Dayton area. Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, followed by a Medical Doctor’s degree from the Wright State University School of Medicine in 1983. Dr. Smith served his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Kettering Memorial Hospital in Dayton, followed by a fellowship in Forensic Pathology at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Toxicology and Criminalistics in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as Forensic Pathology. He is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Wright State University.
Dr. Smith is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology with the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Also, he is a member of and serves on the Board of Governors of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) where he chairs the Physician Council. In addition, he is a member of the AABB and America’s Blood Centers.
Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, an independent, not-for-profit organization, is ISO 9001:2000 registered. Community Blood Center is the sole provider of blood components to the twenty-five hospitals in its fifteen county service area. Community Tissue Services serves the public through procurement, processing and distribution of human tissue donations used for transplantation. Community Tissue Services is composed of eight regional offices and three satellite offices: Dayton, Ohio (Corporate Office); Fort Worth, Texas; Fresno, California; Indianapolis, Indiana; Memphis, Tennessee; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Toledo, Ohio. Satellite locations: Boise, Idaho, Connersville, Indiana, and Medford, Oregon.
