FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2006
Donors with type O-negative blood, Community Blood Center (CBC) needs you to donate at this time.
Currently the supply of O-negative is 52% below safe and adequate levels. Type O-negative is the universal blood type meaning patients with any blood type can receive type O-negative. However, patients with O-negative blood can only receive O-negative. Other blood types in urgent need are B-negative (49% low), O positive (26% low) and A-negative (18% low). The overall blood inventory is 636 pints low going into the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
On the Friday after Thanksgiving, while others shop for gifts, give the Gift of Life!” CBC is closed on Thanksgiving Day and has a limited number of blood drives due to the holiday. CBC expects to collect about one thousand usable pints of blood this week while patients typically use over 1,500 pints per week. CBC’s Dayton location, 349 S. Main St., is open Friday after Thanksgiving from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Call (937) 461-3450 for an appointment or stop in to give blood.
“We ask those who have good health to share a pint of life-saving blood with those less fortunate,” invited Jodi Minneman, chief operating officer for blood services. “One pint can help save the lives of up to three local patients.”
Please note: CBC no longer requires donors to provide their social security number when they register to donate. Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name. Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org or call 1-800-388-GIVE.
