(DAYTON, OH) November 22, 2005 – Community Blood Center (CBC) announced this morning that there is a critical need for blood donors with blood types O-negative and A-negative. The inventory of these blood types is dangerously low especially for a holiday week. CBC urges area residents to give blood this week to help the blood supply meet the needs of area patients.
Currently the O-negative inventory is 130 pints or 30% low. The A-negative inventory is 89 pints or 31% low.
All CBC locations are closed on Thanksgiving Day. Most sites will be open the day after Thanksgiving. The Dayton and West Chester locations will be open on Saturday. For more information or to find a blood drive/collection site in your area, call Community Blood Center toll free at 1-800-388-GIVE or visit www.cbccts.org on the web.
Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. Eligibility guidelines have changed in recent years allowing individuals on maintenance medications for conditions including high cholesterol, hormonal changes or high blood pressure to donate. Individuals with recent tattoos obtained in Kentucky or Ohio can now give blood as long as the tattoo area has healed and the procedure was done in a licensed tattoo parlor. Previously, blood donors had to wait one year from the date they received their tattoo before donating blood again.
Donors need to bring either a CBC Donor ID card or other identification showing Social Security Number.
